At Christmas play and make good cheer, for Christmas comes but once a year. (Thomas Tusser, English poet,1524-1580)Christmas is about the ideals of joyful celebration with friends and family. Our earliest English ancestors understood this well, and brought their cultural traditions to the early Jamestowne settlement. Even during the starving time of 1609, Captain John Smith wrote of "Christmas amongst the Salvages: where wee were never more merrie, nor fedde on more plentie of good oysters, fish, flesh, wild fowle, and good bread, nor better fires in England then in the drie warme smokie houses of Kecoughtan.”You can read more about Christmas in Jamestowne at The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation:Here's wishing you and yours the very best during this holiday season. And, in the tradition of our Jamestowne ancestors, be sure and make time for merry celebration!LindaDr. Linda Gellert, GovernorIndiana Company of the Jamestowne Society
